INTERNATIONAL BUDDHIST CENTRE
RE-ESTABLISHING BUDDHISM IN JAMMU AFTER 1,000 YEARS
Jammu was a great Buddhist city that flourished from the time of the great Buddhist King Asoka to around 7th century, when Buddhism there disappeared. In Jammu one can find many old ruins of Buddhist sites, where H.H. Dalai Lama has also recently visited. Yet there is not a single Buddhist temple or establishment active in this state capital of Jammu & Kashmir. This means that for the Buddhist in Jammu, like the Ladakhis studying there, no institute for studying Buddhism exists.
While every year thousands of Ladakhi youth go to Jammu for their higher studies, they don’t have a place of practice and study of Buddha Dharma available for them in this city known as the “City of Temples” among Indians. To provide the Ladakhis in Jammu a gathering place, Rinpoche has committed to building an “International Buddhist Centre” in Jammu.
So keeping these points in mind I wanted to set up an International Buddhist Centre, which is very beneficial to the young generation of Ladakh, but also benefitting all those interested in Buddha Dharma globally. Jammu is easily accessed from anywhere in the world through air, and has also many land connections via major locations throughout India. In future this Institution will become one of the world’s foremost centres for religious and social harmony and for the prevalence of happiness of the world beings.
Rinpoche’s vision for the centre is non-sectarian, and there will be only only the statue of Shakyamuni Buddha, and that of his two main disciple. The centre is not Drikung, not Nyingma, not Vajrayana, not Mahayana, not Theravada (Hinayana), just 100% Buddha Dharma under the spiritual guidance and leadership of H.E Togdan Rinpoche.
Without a gathering place, young Ladakhi men and women who are studying in Jammu have currently nowhere to invite dharma teachers and continue their Buddhist studies. Deeply concerned for their spiritual education and to preserve the precious lineage of Buddhist faith for the Ladakhi lay community as they are inevitably thrust into the modern world, Rinpoche aspired for the “International Buddhist Centre” to be built over the next two years.
AN INVITTION TO BECOME PART OF THE NEXT 1,000 YEARS OF BUDDHISM IN JAMMU
It is said in the sutras that the merits for sponsors of buying land and building Buddhist Monasteries or Institutions are inconceivable and will never decrease or diminish. It is these centres that are the major causes for the propagation of Dharma, and therefore the purification of bad karma of countless beings.
As of 22nd of January 2015, a down-payment for 750 square meters of land has already been made by H.E. 9th Choje Togden Rinpoche of Ladakh. The International Buddhist Centre will be built in the overall layout of the lotus. The meditation hall is the heart of the lotus, with an initial build of 28 visitor rooms, which can also be used as additional meditation rooms.

THE STORY OF SUDATTA, THE GREAT LAYMAN SPONSOR OF BUDDHA
This is a short account of the land purchase and construction of Jetavana Monastery – Sravasti, during Buddha’s era.
Sudatta, the great layman sponsor of Shakyamuni Buddha, was challenged by the land owner Prince Jetri that he will sell the land for the monastery, only if Sudatta covered it with gold. Sudatta subsequently did that and even in great humility, named the monastery after the prince.
Through this devotion, his endless support for dharma propagation and his perfections, Sudatta attained the first Bodhisattva Bhumi (level) and was immediately reborn in the blissful Tushita heaven, at his death.
Jetavana monastery housed the Buddha and sangha for 25 rainy seasons, it was the site of the first Vinaya ordination and where the much of Tripitaka including the Diamond Sutra was expounded.
